Highlights and deep shadows combined in one image typify the painting technique used mainly in the Baroque period. By placing the main subject in the spotlight, surrounded by dark image areas overloaded with information, only one element is emphasised in the entire pictorial composition. 

Le Duc has mastered this chiaroscuro technique and uses it in much of his food photography.
